does it freeze after selecting a directory for your music?  if so, try clicking cancel and not selecting one instead (and add your music via other means, perhaps by smaller directories at a time)

Hi,

I too have this exact same problem.
Rapid Evolution 2 is set to load my music from my B:\Music folder at start-up but as soon as it opens it just hangs.
I can't click anything, nothing is reponsive and I have to 'End Task'.

The difference is that I am using windows 7 premium.
Anything I can try doing?

I am actually a software developer myself (work in .NET so JAVA is not for me.  Tongue)
Seems like a threading issue? - Does the software load the tracks in a safe way?
(Eg. Load tracks into an array on a background thread and then from a UI thread load them?)

The only reason I ask this is that this kind of lockup happens in .NET when you touch controls from a backgroundworker.

Anyways! - Great software (when it's working) and I am looking forward to Version 3!

hey there,

yes, it should be scanning the music directory using a background thread, so i have no idea why it would lock up altogether.

to test this, can you try disabling the auto-scan of the directory (you might have to rename the directory before loading re2 so you can unset this setting)... do a little playing around and see if that helps, and i might have more info to go investigate on.. thanks!

Ah, well no worries now!

Couldn't get it to stop freezing for love nor money.
Started looking at the installation directory and then realised user settings are under my Windows User profile.

Turned out that the database that stores the songs...
'C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Rapid Evolution 2\music_database.xml'
... was corrupt.

I actually couldn't disable the automatic loading of the files on the B:\ because the program simply wouldn't load.

By deleting the file above, everything started working again!
 Grin

Thanks Anyway!

good to hear that...  still, if the file was corrupt, it shouldn't have caused a freeze, it should have skipped over it and tried to load a backup or loaded a blank re2 at the very worst.  so, if that happens again please send me a copy of the corrupted music_database.xml for me to test with, thanks!

yah, there should be backups automatically created of music_database.xml.  apparently the code to automatically restore from backup is broken, which i'll have to investigate.  if you simply rename one of these backup xml files to music_database.xml, that should allow you to restore most of your song data....

Re: RE Freezes on launch (POTENTIAL WORKAROUND)

Hello all,

I experienced what seems to be the same problem - deleting the music database worked but was less than optimal as I didn't want to rescan all of my music. After restoring the music database from a backup I found that deleting the lookfeel.cfg file alone allowed me to recover. After I did this, the "add song" dialog appears, indicating new files were located in my music directory. I let RE scan the songs, then applied the custom theme afterward and voila - I was back in business. Looks like a deadlock on the file scanner on startup - if I had time I'd do a thread dump and see exactly what's happening - but alas I have mixes to make Smiley

So in short:

- kill RE if it's running/hung
- delete the lookfeel.cfg file in your RE profile dir (you can run explorer "%APPDATA%\Rapid Evolution 2" on windows to get there quickly)
- Start RE
- If it finds songs let RE scan them, OR cancel that dialog and go to Options >> Library  and disable the option to automatically scan on startup

Hope this helps. Qualia - many thanks for this awesome software. It has been of immense help, and I will be donating shortly. Can't wait for RE3 as well..

hey there, thanks for the update

haven't had time to investigate yet, but i just wanted to add you can disable the automatic music scanner on startup if that's truly causing any issues here
