One of the powerful profiling features of Rapid Evolution is the ability to define custom, hierarchical styles. These styles generally correspond to musical genres, but are by no means restricted to this. This page is meant to be a central document where DJs can share and describe their styles, and unify them into a single master taxonomy. This information could eventually be utilized in the Mixshare server.
When DJing out you may have the need to set up crates if you can not take you whole music collection with you. The crates could be vinyl in your record box/bag, external/internal harddrives, CD/DVDs or even your mp3 player.
As many people are aware, lower bit rate mp3s sound rubbish on big systems but fine for smaller parties/sound systems. So it may be worth setting up styles for Lossless (i.e. wav, aiff, flac, ape), 320kBs CBR mp3, 192kBs VBR mp3 etc…
There are times when nature calls at the most inconvenient times, and it is handy to have a long song that will give you ample time to visit the little boys/girls room and get back in time for the mix
This might not be enough time if you need to 'drop the kids off at the pool' in which case you will need someone to cover you while your busy..
Hip hop can be a more difficult style when it comes to harmonic mixing. Many rap songs contain random samples completely out of tune with the primary song elements. Harmonic mixing of many of these songs is not worth the trouble. However, many hip hop songs do have a key or approximate pseudo-key, and harmonic theory is still useful.
Trance may be one of the best styles for harmonic mixing. With consistent song structure and without competing vocals, harmonic mixing of trance allows virtually unlimited layering that can create new musical tapestries with minimal effort.
